Co-Planning and Monitoring for Multi-Stakeholder Teams

BCS developed participatory tools and training materials for use by companies in collaboration with their local governmental and non-governmental partners. Materials from this training program were tested at a workshop of extractive companies operating in Africa. The program was ground-breaking in that it allowed the multi-stakeholder teams to draw from the materials presented and learn together, work together and plan together for future collaboration. Among the participatory tools in the training package are the community scorecard, participatory budgeting, good neighbor agreements, and grievance mechanisms. The training package is available through CommDev at www.CommDev.org or through BCS at info@bcsynergies.com

A Unique Opportunity in Madagascar

The first large-scale mining project in Madagascar has just begun. BCS, working with The World Bank to help ensure that local communities benefit from this undertaking, is helping create a unique community-run regional foundation to support and strengthen local initiative. We are also working to promote transparent information by identifying mechanisms and processes that give local people easy access to information about mining activities and revenues. In addition, we are working to build the capacity of community members to use locally accessible tools to monitor mining revenues accruing to local governments and to hold them accountable.

Mining Revenue Transparency in Mali

BCS led an international assessment team to examine the transparency of companies, government and inter-governmental agencies involved with mining revenues in Mali for Oxfam America. The study is being used to help civil society groups in Mali define their role in influencing the current revision of the national mining code.

Stakeholder Engagement and Analysis in Multiple Countries

BCS advised leading energy and mining companies on our methodology and approach to stakeholder engagement, participatory needs and capacities assessment and analysis so that they could identify key resources within the communities where they operate, identify partners and develop mutually beneficial relationships.

Public-Private Partnerships in Angola

BCS worked with the United States Agency for International Development in Angola to strengthen its private sector partnerships. BCS identified lessons learned from local and international experiences in building and managing public-private sector alliances and from the constraints and opportunities for these types of partnerships at USAID staff on negotiating and expanding current partnerships, as well as advising on the potential for new partnerships.
